1. Wet the bar, not just your hair

Run the bar under warm water for a few seconds until the surface softens slightly. A dry bar dragged across wet hair won't lather — it'll just drag.

2. Build the lather in your hands first

Rub the wet bar between your palms for a few seconds until you've got a working lather, then set the bar down somewhere it can drain. Working from your hands rather than scrubbing the bar directly against your scalp gives you more even coverage and makes the bar last longer.

3. Work it through hair first, beard second

Massage the lather into your scalp and hair the way you would any shampoo, then rebuild a smaller amount of lather in your hands for your beard. Beard hair is coarser and the skin underneath is more exposed, so a lighter pass is usually all it needs.

4. Rinse thoroughly

Solid bars are concentrated, so give hair and beard a longer rinse than you might with a bottled product until the water runs clear. Leftover residue is the most common reason someone tries a bar once and goes back to liquid.

5. Let the bar dry between uses

This is the step that actually determines how long a bar lasts. How often should you use it?
